The Philadelphia Phillies have been one of baseball’s hottest teams recently, completing a remarkable turnaround after a difficult start to the season. Still, with the summer months approaching, the front office will need to evaluate areas where the roster can improve.
Since the beginning of May, Philadelphia has played among the league’s best, climbing from 10 games below .500 back into postseason contention. Considering the expectations surrounding the club entering the year, returning to the playoff race is more in line with what many anticipated from a team viewed as a legitimate National League contender.
Despite the surge, some concerns remain. The Phillies may have moved on from Rob Thomson, but the roster itself is largely unchanged, and several players who struggled early in the season have yet to fully find their footing. Fortunately, the team has been able to lean on its star talent to overcome many of those issues, but weaknesses still exist.
As the trade deadline draws closer, Philadelphia will likely be exploring opportunities to strengthen the roster with impactful additions.
Recently, Bradford Doolittle of ESPN suggested that the Phillies need to find more support for the club’s star trio in the lineup before the deadline.
Outfield Upgrade Makes the Most Sense
While there are some lingering questions at the back end of the rotation involving Aaron Nola and Andrew Painter, the team’s biggest need appears to be offensive help. Although it remains early in the trade market, potential targets who could bolster the lineup include Mike Trout, Byron Buxton, and Taylor Ward.
The outfield stands out as the most logical area for improvement, particularly with both Adolis Garcia and Justin Crawford enduring difficult seasons. Third base once looked like a position that required attention, but Alec Bohm has significantly improved his production in recent weeks, posting an OPS above .800 during May.
Given Bohm’s resurgence and his All-Star campaign in 2024, the Phillies may be more inclined to focus their efforts on acquiring outfield help. Adding a right-handed bat would also provide better balance to a lineup whose three most productive hitters swing from the left side.
Ultimately, if Philadelphia is serious about making a deep postseason run this year, upgrading the offense remains the most pressing objective. The organization may need to be cautious because of its limited prospect depth, but opportunities should still exist to make meaningful improvements before the trade deadline.
