BREAKING: Rangers Part Ways With Key Player Ahead Of Division Move

The New York Rangers are set to lose their top star. With the team continuing to struggle during the 2025–26 season, Artemi Panarin’s time in New York is coming to an end, and a move to a Metropolitan Division rival is now inevitable.

Panarin is entering the final year of his contract, and extension talks between the winger and the Rangers have collapsed. Panarin is seeking a major payday, while New York has remained unwilling to commit long term. As a result, the organization will move him rather than risk losing him for nothing once free agency opens.

That move will ultimately send Panarin to the Carolina Hurricanes. According to Sportsnet’s Ryan Dixon, the star winger is expected to sign with Carolina this summer, making any trade this season a short-term rental for a Stanley Cup contender.

The Hurricanes and Rangers have dominated the Metropolitan Division in recent years, combining for three division titles over the past four seasons. They’ve also clashed in three playoff series during the last six years, with New York winning the most recent two. Panarin joining Carolina would dramatically shift the balance of power in the division.

Rangers Decline Long-Term Commitment to Panarin

Dixon projects Panarin will sign a six-year, $66 million deal with the Hurricanes, carrying an $11 million annual value—slightly below his current $11.6 million cap hit.

Despite the Rangers’ struggles, Panarin remains the team’s offensive leader, topping the roster in goals, assists, and points. However, his production has declined in each of the last three seasons, and the 2025–26 campaign is on pace to be his lowest scoring rate since 2016–17.

Age played a decisive role in the Rangers’ decision. Panarin recently turned 34 and would be nearly 35 when a new deal begins. New York ultimately decided against committing long term at a premium price.

More Changes Coming in New York

Panarin won’t be the only veteran leaving. Vincent Trocheck is also expected to be moved, signaling a significant leadership overhaul. Both players currently serve as alternate captains.

Since the start of the 2024–25 season, the Rangers have managed just 58 wins in 122 games with a minus-two goal differential. With results stagnating, the franchise is officially turning the page.

Panarin’s exit is no longer a question of if — it’s simply the next move on the board.
