The Seattle Mariners have endured one of the worst offensive seasons in Major League Baseball in 2026, and their struggles at the plate have played a major role in their disappointing campaign.
Heading into Tuesday night’s matchup with the Texas Rangers, Seattle ranked last in MLB in runs scored, producing just 569 runs across 144 games. The challenge has been even greater at home, where T-Mobile Park has once again earned a reputation as one of the toughest hitting environments in baseball, with Statcast ranking it as the least hitter-friendly ballpark in the majors based on Park Factors.
However, even in a ballpark known for limiting power, some hitters have managed to overcome the difficult conditions. Mariners designated hitter Lazaro Montes became the latest player to do so in spectacular fashion.
During the bottom of the fourth inning against Texas, Montes launched a towering home run that traveled a staggering 474 feet, setting the record for the longest home run ever recorded at T-Mobile Park during the Statcast era. The blast came in just the sixth MLB game of Montes’ young career, immediately putting his raw power on full display.
The massive shot also placed Montes among the elite power hitters in the league this season. His 474-foot homer matched Fernando Tatis Jr. for the longest home run hit in MLB during the 2026 season.
Montes’ historic swing gave Seattle a much-needed boost, cutting the Rangers’ lead to just one run in a crucial matchup between two teams battling for postseason positioning. Unfortunately for the Mariners, Texas responded immediately, erupting for five runs in the following inning to extend its advantage back to six runs.
The Mariners’ playoff hopes continue to fade, as they entered Tuesday six games behind the final American League Wild Card spot with five teams ahead of them in the standings. With their postseason chances slipping away, Seattle appears increasingly focused on developing younger talent, giving players like Montes a valuable opportunity to establish themselves.
For the remainder of the 2026 season, Montes will have the chance to prove he belongs as a fixture in the Mariners’ everyday lineup while giving fans a glimpse of the power potential the organization hopes can help transform its struggling offense.
