When UNC extended an offer to five-star prospect NaVorro Bowman Jr., the hope was that the Tar Heels had not entered his recruitment too late to make a meaningful impact.
North Carolina officially offered Bowman Jr. on July 23, putting the Tar Heels in the mix for one of the fastest-rising prospects in the 2027 recruiting class.
There was a brief scare regarding his recruitment this morning, but the latest update shows that UNC remains firmly in contention.
On Monday, Sam Kayser of League Ready reported a list of official visits Bowman Jr. has scheduled so far.
Four programs currently appear on his upcoming calendar:
UConn: September 4th
Illinois: September 10th
Texas: September 19th
Arizona: September 25th
There was no sign of UNC on the list…
However, shortly afterward, Kayser provided an important update, revealing that Bowman Jr. is still expected to visit UNC. The only difference is that the visit has not been officially scheduled yet.
Crisis averted, for now!
“North Carolina is another program expected to receive a visit from 5⭐️ NaVorro Bowman Jr., source told @LeagueRDY.
The Tar Heels and Mike Malone are making a push for one of the top guard prospects in high school basketball.”
According to the Rivals Industry Composite, Bowman Jr. is currently ranked as the No. 12 overall prospect in the 2027 class. The 6-foot-3 guard is also considered the No. 5 guard in the class and the No. 3 prospect from California.
The son of former four-time NFL All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler NaVorro Bowman chose not to follow his father’s football path, instead making a name for himself on the basketball court. He has established himself as an elite scoring guard, averaging 22.5 points per game during his junior season at Notre Dame and earning first-team all-state honors.
Even a national title couldn’t hold off the weight of the NBA for Tyler Hansbrough
At its core, this update delivers exactly what Tar Heel fans wanted to hear: UNC’s late entry into Bowman Jr.’s recruitment does not appear to be working against them at this stage. If anything, the Tar Heels’ emergence has added another layer of intrigue to his recruitment.
Michael Malone and North Carolina have been aggressive in their pursuit of elite high school talent. The objective is clear: build one of the nation’s premier recruiting classes and establish the foundation for this new chapter of Carolina Basketball in Chapel Hill.
It would be no surprise to see the Tar Heels apply serious pressure to several 2027 stars, targeting players who can fill positional needs while also bringing versatility. Bowman Jr. fits that mold perfectly, possessing the ability to play either guard position.

The most intriguing part is that Bowman Jr. may not have reached his ceiling yet. He is still only beginning to show just how dominant he could become as his game continues to develop.
For North Carolina, this is an encouraging recruiting development. The Tar Heels now have to find an opening in Bowman Jr.’s packed schedule and get him to Chapel Hill for a visit. Once he steps onto campus, UNC will have the opportunity to let the atmosphere and tradition of Chapel Hill make the rest of its recruiting pitch.
