Boston Celtics center Luke Kornet recently addressed his pending free agency, admitting he’s unsure if he’ll be back with the team next season.
“As far as what’s next, I’ll figure things out when the time comes,” Kornet said. “Right now, it’s just about decompressing, spending time with family. We just finished playing, so it’s hard to know what everything’s going to look like yet.”
Kornet appeared in a career-high 73 games for Boston during the 2024-25 season, averaging 6.0 points and 5.3 rebounds. He delivered a standout performance in Game 5 against the New York Knicks, finishing with 11 points, a career-best seven blocks, and hitting all five of his shot attempts. However, the Celtics were eliminated in Game 6, ending their season in the second round of the playoffs.
“The season obviously didn’t end the way we wanted,” Kornet said. “It’s tough to reflect on it right now, but with some time, I think I’ll be able to appreciate what we did accomplish. We had some strong stretches, but ultimately fell short — and that’s the lasting feeling for now.”
Since entering the NBA, Kornet has had stints with several teams before finding a role in Boston beginning in 2021-22. The Celtics brought him back on a two-year, $4.54 million deal, followed by a one-year, $2.08 million contract after last year’s championship run.

His future with the franchise is uncertain, especially as Boston faces serious cap challenges and aims to avoid a historic $500 million luxury tax bill. With Al Horford also hitting free agency and Kristaps Porzingis’ health still a question mark, the Celtics will need to address their frontcourt situation soon.
