The St. Louis Cardinals have made a series of roster moves headlined by the departure of a former high draft selection. While most of the transactions won’t have an immediate impact on the big league roster, one decision marked the end of a player’s six-year journey through the organization.
After steadily climbing the Cardinals’ farm system and eventually earning a spot at Triple-A Memphis, the 26-year-old right-hander was unable to make the final leap to St. Louis. Following a difficult 2026 campaign, the organization officially cut ties as part of a wave of minor league roster adjustments announced Thursday.
His departure closes the chapter on a pitcher the Cardinals selected in the fourth round of the 2020 MLB Draft out of the University of Missouri. Although he entered professional baseball with considerable promise, his debut was delayed until 2021, when he made just two appearances, including one start, for High-A Peoria.
His breakout season came in 2023 where he made 27 appearances, including 19 starts, and posted an impressive 2.44 ERA over 96 innings with High-A Peoria, establishing himself as one of the organization’s more intriguing pitching prospects.
That performance helped elevate his standing within the Cardinals’ farm system. In 2024, he split time between Double-A and Triple-A while earning recognition as the club’s No. 20 overall prospect. Although his ranking slipped to No. 26 the following year, he remained firmly on the organization’s radar while spending most of 2025 at Triple-A Memphis.
However, the 2026 season proved to be a major setback. Ian Bedell spent the entire year with Memphis but struggled to find consistency, recording an 11.78 ERA over 11 appearances, including one start, across 18 1/3 innings. Those struggles ultimately led to Thursday’s decision to grant him his unconditional release.
The Cardinals detailed the transactions in an official statement.
“RHP Brandt Thompson has been transferred from Springfield (AA) to Memphis (AAA),” the Cardinals announced. “OF Travis Honeyman (AA) has been placed on the 7-day IL. INF Trey Paige (AA) has been reinstated from the Development List. RHP Keiverson RamÃrez has been transferred from the FCL to Palm Beach (A).
“LHP Ixan Henderson (AAA) and RHP Joseph King (A+) had their rehab assignments transferred from the FCL to Palm Beach. RHP Ian Bedell (AAA) has been given his unconditional release.”
Despite the disappointing finish to his Cardinals tenure, Bedell is still only 26 years old and has experience pitching at the Triple-A level. Given his previous success in the minors and his former status as one of the organization’s top prospects, it wouldn’t be surprising if another club offers him an opportunity to continue his career.
For the Cardinals, the move is unlikely to affect the major league roster in the short term. While St. Louis could certainly benefit from additional bullpen depth, the organization evidently did not view Bedell as an immediate option to contribute at the big league level. Instead, Thursday’s transaction signals the end of a once-promising development story and the beginning of what could be a fresh start elsewhere for the former fourth-round pick.
