The Philadelphia Phillies have experienced plenty of change since the end of the 2025 season, from a managerial overhaul to another trade deadline spent searching for solutions. But next month, a familiar figure with deep ties to both the Phillies and the New York Yankees will make his return to Citizens Bank Park in a new role.
Although his time in Philadelphia ended before the club’s 2022 World Series run, Joe Girardi remains one of baseball’s most accomplished managers to have led both historic franchises. Now, the former Yankees catcher and National League Manager of the Year is set to return to Philadelphia, not as a major league manager, but as the leader of one of the nation’s premier showcase events.
According to a press release sent to Forbes on Wednesday, “Perfect Game, the world’s largest youth baseball and softball platform and scouting service, today announced that former Phillies All-Star outfielder Shane Victorino and former Phillies manager Joe Girardi will serve as managers for Team East and Team West, respectively, at the 2026 Perfect Game DICK’S All-American Classic, taking place on Sunday, August 16, at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pa.” The release also highlighted Girardi’s credentials, stating, “Girardi managed the Phillies from 2020-22 after previously leading the New York Yankees to a World Series championship in 2009. During his 15-year Major League playing career, Girardi was a three-time World Series champion and earned a reputation as one of the game’s premier defensive catchers.”
World Series Champion Set for Return to Citizens Bank Park
Girardi’s upcoming appearance at Citizens Bank Park comes several years after his departure from the Phillies, but it also arrives as speculation continues about whether he could one day return to a major league dugout.
“He’s open to managing again, a job he did for 14 seasons,” Scott Lauber reported for The Philadelphia Inquirer. “He won a World Series in 2009 with the Yankees against the Phils, was the National League Manager of the Year in 2006 with the Marlins, and guided the Phillies for two-plus seasons before being fired early in the 2022 season.”
His résumé includes four World Series championships overall—three as a catcher with the Yankees and another as the club’s manager in 2009—further solidifying his place among the franchise’s most accomplished figures.
Phillies Have Moved in a Different Direction Since
While Girardi brought experience and stability to Philadelphia during a challenging stretch that included the COVID-19 pandemic, the success he enjoyed elsewhere never fully materialized with the Phillies. Since his departure, the organization has continued to reshape its leadership, often turning to managers with Yankees connections.
“The Phillies fell short again in 2021 before Girardi was fired in June of 2022 after a slow start,” Lauber added. “Rob Thomson, Girardi’s bench coach, took over and guided the Phillies to the World Series. The Phillies fired Thomson in April and replaced him with Don Mattingly.”
The franchise has undergone significant change since Girardi’s tenure ended, but his return to Citizens Bank Park for the Perfect Game All-American Classic gives Phillies fans another chance to see a former manager whose career includes championship success in New York and a notable chapter in Philadelphia.
Although the event will not mark a return to a major league dugout, it places Girardi back in a leadership role at one of baseball’s premier showcase events. And with the veteran skipper openly expressing his desire to manage again, his appearance in Philadelphia may not be the last time fans see him wearing a baseball uniform.
