HUGE BOOST: Phillies Reunite With Proven Veteran in Bid to Address Growing Roster Concerns

According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, the Philadelphia Phillies have made a roster move ahead of their upcoming series recalling left-handed reliever to the major league bullpen. To make room, right-hander Alan Rangel was optioned back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley following the team’s next game.

The move points to another decision looming in the starting rotation before the All-Star break. With the fifth starter’s spot coming up again, the Phillies are preparing for a bullpen game. Rangel made his first career major league start on July 2 without the use of an opener, but Banks could now be asked to fill that role. Tim Mayza has also served as an opener for the club at times this season.

Banks has struggled in 2026. Across 26 major league appearances, he holds an 0–4 record with a 5.86 ERA and a 3.69 FIP, along with a 1.92 WHIP and a 2.38 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Opposing hitters are batting .323 against him, supported by a .411 BABIP. His stint in the minors has not gone much better, as he posted a 6.23 ERA in four appearances at Triple-A, though his 2.87 FIP suggests some bad luck. After earning trust late last season and heading into 2026, Banks’ standing in the bullpen has clearly eroded.

Future of the Fifth Rotation Spot

Uncertainty continues to surround the back end of the Phillies’ rotation. Andrew Painter opened the season as the fifth starter but was optioned after struggling early in his rookie campaign. A return to the majors later this year remains possible, though August appears to be the earliest realistic timeframe unless injuries force the issue. With Aaron Nola also failing to find consistency, the Phillies are expected to be active in the starting pitching market at the trade deadline, likely targeting swingman-type arms rather than elite front-line starters. Rangel could also work his way back into consideration after the All-Star break.

Bullpen Concerns

The state of the bullpen remains a growing concern. Recalling Banks highlights the lack of reliable options, particularly from the left side. Outside of Mayza, Phillies left-handed relievers have struggled mightily, combining for a 4.94 ERA and a 67.7 percent left-on-base rate, both among the worst marks in baseball. That group has also allowed the highest batting average and BABIP of any left-handed relief corps this season. With Banks back in the fold, the Phillies now carry four left-handed relievers on the 26-man roster.

Help on the Way

Some relief could be coming soon, as Brad Keller is nearing a return from the injured list. Keller is expected to make a rehab appearance on July 3, though there is no firm timetable for his activation. Once he is ready, the Phillies will face multiple roster decisions. Lou Trivino could be designated for assignment to clear space, which would also open a spot on the 40-man roster. Until then, Banks’ return to the majors may be a short-term solution as the Phillies continue searching for bullpen stability.
