ICYMI: Done Deal!! UNC basketball officially adds commitment from All-Star forward

North Carolina has added another international talent to its roster, landing a commitment from Greek forward. The 6-foot-11 big man revealed his decision on social media Saturday, giving Michael Malone a highly experienced frontcourt addition with significant long-term potential.

Originally from Thessaloniki, he has spent the last four years developing within the Panathinaikos organization, one of Europe’s most respected basketball clubs that competes in both the Greek Basket League and the EuroLeague. During his time there, the 21-year-old gained valuable experience at the professional level, including being part of Panathinaikos’ 2024 EuroLeague championship squad. He also captured a Greek League championship along with multiple domestic cup titles, bringing a level of winning experience that is uncommon for a college newcomer.

Alexandros Samodurov emerged as a promising prospect through Greece’s junior basketball system before signing a long-term contract with Panathinaikos in 2022. His development continued through loan appearances in Greece’s second division, where he earned regular minutes and expanded his offensive skill set against professional competition.

Known for his mobility and length, Samodurov fits the mold of a modern stretch forward. He runs the floor effectively, provides rim protection and has shown flashes of perimeter shooting ability according to scouting evaluations. Although he still needs to continue adding strength physically, his size, instincts and defensive versatility should allow him to contribute immediately in a rotational role.

On the international stage, Samodurov has represented Greece across multiple age levels, highlighted by a bronze medal performance at EuroBasket and All-Star Five recognition at the FIBA U20 European Championship. His professional experience should help smooth his transition to the college game, while his upside makes him an intriguing long-term building block for North Carolina. He will also reunite in Chapel Hill with former teammate and Virginia Tech transfer Neoklis Avdalas.
