The St. Louis Cardinals are quickly approaching one of the most important stretches of their 2026 season, and every game is becoming more significant as the Major League Baseball trade deadline draws near. While the club remains within striking distance of a postseason berth, a slow start to the second half has raised questions about whether the front office will buy, sell, or simply stand pat. If St. Louis decides to strengthen its roster before the deadline, many believe the starting rotation should be at the top of the priority list.
Following Thursday night’s loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Cardinals dropped to 52-50 and now sit fourth in the National League Central. The club has stumbled out of the All-Star break with a 2-5 record, leaving them just one and a half games outside of a Wild Card position with a little more than a week remaining before the trade deadline.
President of baseball operations Chaim Bloom has already made it clear that there will be no “shortcuts” during the organization’s long-term build, making it seem unlikely that St. Louis will sacrifice top prospects for a major acquisition. With the team sitting only two games above .500, a blockbuster move appears even less probable, although the Cardinals remain firmly in the playoff conversation.
Still, if the Cardinals decide to make an addition, improving the rotation appears to be the most logical path.
That possibility was highlighted by The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, who recently identified the ideal trade target for every contender. For St. Louis, Bowden pointed to a familiar face: Kansas City Royals veteran right-hander Michael Wacha.
Cardinals Face Critical Deadline Decision
“St. Louis Cardinals — Michael Wacha, RHP, Kansas City Royals,” Bowden wrote. “The Cardinals need to go for it and why not have a reunion with Wacha, who was drafted by St. Louis 12 years ago? He’s controllable through 2027 with a team option for 2028 at a reasonable annual salary ($18 million this year and $14 million each of the next two years). An AL All-Star, Wacha has a 3.66 ERA in 125 1/3 innings.”
Although St. Louis does not currently appear poised to make a significant move, Wacha checks nearly every box the Cardinals would want in a trade target.
The veteran right-hander has posted a 3.66 ERA across 20 starts this season, continuing a stretch of dependable pitching that has made him one of the more consistent starters in baseball. He also hasn’t finished a full season with an ERA higher than 3.86 since 2021, underscoring his reliability.
Beyond his production, Wacha brings familiarity. He spent the first seven seasons of his major league career with the Cardinals and remains under contract through 2027, with a $14 million club option for the 2028 season. That team control makes him much more valuable than a typical rental acquisition.
St. Louis currently fields the second-youngest roster in Major League Baseball with an average age of just 26.9 years. While that youth has energized the club, experienced veterans remain essential, especially within a rotation filled with young arms.
Adding a proven pitcher like Wacha would not only strengthen the rotation on the field but also provide valuable leadership over the course of a demanding 162-game season. Young pitchers often thrive early before the grind of a full season catches up with them, and having a seasoned veteran who understands those challenges could be invaluable.
Whether the Cardinals ultimately decide to buy remains uncertain. However, if Bloom chooses to reinforce the roster without abandoning the organization’s long-term vision, a reunion with Wacha could represent one of the smartest and most balanced moves available before the trade deadline.
