The Boston Red Sox have received valuable performances from several members of their pitching staff during the 2026 season.
When ace Garrett Crochet suffered an injury and was sidelined after his last appearance on April 25, the Red Sox faced a major challenge. Losing one of Major League Baseball’s premier pitchers could have derailed their season, but the team has managed to stay competitive thanks to other arms stepping up.
Among those who have answered the call, veteran right-hander Sonny Gray has been one of the biggest difference-makers.
Gray has emerged as a reliable force in the rotation, posting a remarkable 15-3 record with a 2.65 ERA while recording 117 strikeouts over 132.2 innings. His performance has placed him among the league’s elite pitchers and helped stabilize Boston’s staff during Crochet’s absence.
Although Gray has filled the void admirably, the Red Sox are still hoping Crochet can return before the postseason. However, recent reports suggest his comeback remains uncertain.
“Nearly four months later, with Crochet’s return still not guaranteed, things have not turned out nearly as disastrous as initially feared. The Red Sox have Sonny Gray to thank for that,” Sean McAdam wrote.
At this point, there is still no definitive timeline for Crochet’s return. While Gray has been outstanding, getting their ace back healthy could prove crucial as Boston prepares for a potential October run.
If the Red Sox hope to make a serious push for a championship, having Crochet back in the rotation alongside Gray could be one of the most important factors in their World Series pursuit.
