JUST IN: Mets Drop Bombshell Lineup Decision on Mark Vientos

The New York Mets will open a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field.

The Mets are coming off a hard-fought 5–4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in series finale, a result that helped them avoid being swept. Mark Vientos did not take part in that game, and his absence has continued into last matchup.

Ahead of the series opener, New York released its starting lineup, and Vientos was once again left out. The move highlights a difficult stretch for the infielder, who is enduring the worst season of his career since becoming a full-time major leaguer.

Through 57 games, Vientos is batting .211 with 41 hits, nine doubles, seven home runs, 19 runs scored, and 26 RBIs. His slump has been particularly noticeable of late, as he has not recorded a hit since May 31 against Miami. Since then, he is 0-for-12 with six strikeouts.

Vientos has also faced challenges defensively while adjusting to first base. Manager Carlos Mendoza pointed out the inconsistency in his play, explaining that while there have been stretches of solid defense, routine plays have at times become an issue.

For now, Mendoza has opted to go with Jarred Young, who has been productive when given opportunities, posting a .890 OPS in 25 games this season.

After Thursday’s win, the Mets improved to 30–38, though they still sit at the bottom of the National League East standings.

Right-hander Nolan McLean is scheduled to make his 14th start of the season for New York. He enters the game with a 3–4 record and a 3.93 ERA across 72.1 innings pitched. McLean has been sharp recently, allowing just two runs over his last 11 innings.

The Braves, meanwhile, are coming off a disappointing two-game sweep at the hands of the Chicago White Sox. Even so, they remain comfortably atop the NL East with a 45–23 record and have gone 6–4 over their last 10 games. Right-hander Spencer Strider will start for Atlanta as the division rivals begin their weekend series.
