The clock is still ticking as teams like the Boston Red Sox await free agent third baseman decision.
Boston is one of several teams pursuing the two-time World Series champion to finalize its offseason moves. He will address the Red Sox’s need for a right-handed bat, significantly boost their defense, and bring valuable playoff experience to take on a leadership role. Now, the decision rests with Bregman and his agent, Scott Boras.
Alex Bregman is reportedly seeking a multi-year contract and has already declined a six-year offer to return to the Houston Astros. Despite recent optimism from Houston’s front office, the Red Sox appear to have an advantage in the race for the two-time World Series champion.
“Alex Bregman, who is likely to land with the Red Sox, Cubs, or Tigers soon; sources within the Astros organization are doubtful he’ll return to Houston,” reported ESPN’s Buster Olney. “If he signs with Boston, he could take advantage of the Green Monster while adjusting back to playing in the middle infield. A move to Chicago would likely involve a short-term, Cody Bellinger-style deal, putting immediate pressure on him to perform. Signing with Detroit would signal the Tigers are all-in, with Bregman’s addition highlighting their urgency to win before Tarik Skubal hits free agency in two years.”
There are several reasons Bregman might lean toward Boston beyond his familiarity with Fenway’s Green Monster. He has a strong connection with Red Sox manager Alex Cora, having played alongside him during Houston’s 2017 World Series run. Bregman’s leadership and experience would be invaluable both on and off the field, providing mentorship to young players and prospects. His presence could also elevate the Red Sox into serious contention.

With the additions of Justin Wilson and Aroldis Chapman, Boston’s bullpen has seen significant improvement, while the starting rotation has been bolstered by Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, and Patrick Sandoval. Adding Alex Bregman—a proven winner and respected veteran—could elevate the Red Sox even further, potentially helping them break out of their postseason drought in 2025 and reach new heights.
