JUST IN: North Carolina Tar Heels Set to Land Explosive 4-Star Forward in Huge Recruiting Coup

There are still a few roster questions that Michael Malone and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill need to answer ahead of the 2026-27 season, which is why the latest development has generated plenty of buzz. Former LSU pledge Kevin Thomas is officially visiting North Carolina, and the news has quickly caught the attention of Tar Heels fans.

The update seemed to emerge unexpectedly, especially considering much of Malone’s recruiting focus lately has centered on overseas prospects, particularly frontcourt additions. Still, Thomas remains one of the more intriguing unsigned talents available, and his upside is hard to ignore. Now, many are wondering whether this visit could speed up his recruitment process.

That’s certainly what the UNC fanbase is hoping for as Thomas heads to Chapel Hill to tour the program and spend time with the new coaching staff. According to 247Sports insider David Sisk, sources indicate the Tar Heels are currently in a strong position with the talented wing. With momentum building, speculation has already started about whether a commitment could come sooner rather than later.

UNC and Michael Malone to land SF Kevin Thomas during his official visit

While the full report remains behind a VIP paywall, Keeping It Heel’s Nick Delahanty also confirmed the visit shortly after the news surfaced. Thomas is regarded as a four-star prospect and is ranked as the No. 35 small forward and No. 90 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class.

During his recruitment, Thomas collected 13 scholarship offers and previously took official visits to LSU, Florida State, Miami, and Auburn. North Carolina now becomes the fifth stop in his recruitment journey, with Malone reportedly eager to finalize things quickly.

Kevin Thomas, Sagemont Prep, Small Forward

Thomas had initially been committed to LSU, but after Matt McMahon departed from the Tigers program, the highly regarded wing reopened his recruitment to explore other opportunities. LSU later hired Will Wade, though it appears a reunion between Thomas and the Tigers is unlikely at this point.

That could work in favor of the Tar Heels, especially as Malone continues reshaping the roster for next season. Most early Top 25 projections currently have North Carolina outside the rankings, and losing Henri Veesaar to the NBA Draft certainly affected expectations heading into the campaign.

Thomas may not arrive as an instant superstar capable of completely changing the outlook in Year 1, but his shooting ability could provide immediate value. The 6-foot-6 wing connected on 44 percent of his three-point attempts during his senior season at Sagemont Prep, showcasing the kind of perimeter scoring that could strengthen Malone’s rotation.

For now, all eyes remain on how Thomas’ official visit unfolds. North Carolina appears to have positioned itself well late in the recruiting process, though there is always the possibility another program makes a late push. Still, the fact that the Tar Heels secured this visit this deep into the cycle says a lot about Thomas’ level of interest in the ACC program. If things continue trending in the right direction, it would not be surprising to see Thomas commit to Carolina in the near future.
