The Philadelphia Phillies have made little effort to hide their urgency as the MLB trade deadline approaches.
After reviving their season under interim manager Don Mattingly, Philadelphia has climbed back into the playoff race. However, if the club hopes to compete with National League powerhouses like the Los Angeles Dodgers in October, additional reinforcements appear necessary.
While bullpen help and starting pitching depth remain priorities, the Phillies’ biggest long-term need may still be a productive right-handed-hitting outfielder. It’s a roster hole the organization has been trying to address for several seasons, and solving it before the deadline remains a top objective.
The challenge, however, is the lack of available talent. The market for established right-handed outfield bats is thin, leaving Philadelphia with only a handful of realistic trade targets.
MLB.com’s Paul Casella recently pointed out that the pool of available hitters is already limited, and it becomes even smaller when narrowed to right-handed outfielders. Unless the Phillies unexpectedly reshape their infield, the outfield remains the most logical place to upgrade before the deadline.
One player consistently connected to Philadelphia is Minnesota Twins star Byron Buxton. The veteran center fielder has long been viewed as an ideal fit thanks to his elite defense, power, and right-handed bat.
Buxton has typically dismissed trade speculation by emphasizing that he owns a no-trade clause and has no plans to waive it. However, a recent report suggests that stance may not be as firm when it comes to the Phillies.
During an episode of The Phillies Show podcast, Phillies insider Jim Salisbury revealed that a current Philadelphia player recently told him Buxton had previously indicated he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause specifically to join the Phillies.
If accurate, that revelation removes one of the biggest potential obstacles to a blockbuster deal. Even so, completing a trade remains a difficult task.
Minnesota still views itself as capable of competing in the near future, making the Twins reluctant to move one of their franchise players. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s farm system lacks the elite prospect depth often required to acquire a player of Buxton’s caliber.
With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, Phillies fans will undoubtedly continue dreaming about a blockbuster move for Buxton. Still, despite the encouraging report regarding his willingness to come to Philadelphia, a deal remains far from certain.
As Casella noted, Buxton and Mike Trout have been popular names in Phillies trade speculation for years, but neither appears to be a likely trade candidate as things currently stand.
