The Boston Red Sox received a welcome bit of injury-related optimism even as another frustrating result played out at Fenway Park. After Boston’s 2–1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, interim manager Chad Tracy shared an update on veteran first baseman Willson Contreras.

The defeat dropped the Red Sox to 17–24 on the season, keeping them in last place in the American League East. With the team still struggling to find consistency, Contreras’ absence from the lineup drew attention, especially given his importance to the offense.
Contreras, who arrived in Boston during the offseason via trade from the St. Louis Cardinals, has been dealing with a bruised right hand after being hit by a pitch earlier in the week against the Tampa Bay Rays. Although he was able to take batting practice before Tuesday’s game, the club chose to keep him out as a precaution.
Following the game, Tracy addressed Contreras’ status during his postgame media availability, explaining that the veteran was not available off the bench Tuesday night but is expected to be ready for Wednesday’s contest.
The update offered a dose of optimism for a lineup that continues to search for reliable production. Contreras has been one of Boston’s most dependable hitters this season, providing power and run production in the middle of the order.

Offense was again difficult to come by in the series opener, despite several late scoring chances. Phillies ace Zack Wheeler controlled the game, allowing just one run over 7⅓ innings while working with remarkable efficiency early.
While the loss added to Boston’s early-season struggles, Tracy’s encouraging comments on Contreras stood out as a positive development. As the series against Philadelphia continues and the Red Sox try to climb out of a division hole, getting one of their top hitters back quickly could give the team a much-needed boost.
