Michael Malone and the UNC basketball staff continue to put in serious work as they finalize the roster for the 2026–27 season.
Progress is evident. Since Malone’s arrival in Chapel Hill, the program has made notable strides both on the roster front and within the coaching structure. Even so, a few key tasks remain unfinished, with completing the roster standing as the most pressing objective right now.
As the offseason moves forward, there are three available players UNC fans should be closely monitoring.
Kevin Thomas
One of the more unexpected names to emerge is Kevin Thomas, a four-star recruit who was previously committed to LSU and recently scheduled a visit to Chapel Hill.
Thomas wasn’t widely discussed as a UNC target until news of that visit surfaced, but his appeal is easy to understand. He profiles as a developmental piece with intriguing upside. With his size and length, Thomas offers defensive potential and has also shown flashes of offensive ability. The coaching staff clearly believes there’s untapped potential they could bring out, making him a possible under-the-radar addition.
Alexandros Samodurov
UNC has also been strongly connected to Alexandros Samodurov, a 6-foot-11 forward currently involved in the NBA Draft process. A former teammate of Neoklis Avdalas, Samodurov would be a logical fit if he chooses the college route next season.
Samodurov is known for his versatility and mobility, fitting the modern mold of a big forward who can impact the game on both ends of the floor. He’s not limited to playing with his back to the basket, which aligns well with how college basketball has evolved. With frontcourt depth still a need, he remains one of the most attractive options available. Should he withdraw from the draft, UNC is expected to pursue him aggressively.

Brice Dessert
While there has been less buzz surrounding Brice Dessert compared to the other two names, he remains a player worth watching as UNC looks to strengthen its frontcourt.
An experienced big man who has drawn interest from several high-profile programs, Dessert may not have UNC in the lead at the moment. Still, a late push wouldn’t be surprising if other options fall through. A potential pairing of Sayon Keita and Dessert would give Malone an interesting blend of size, experience, and versatility to work with.
Overall, the foundation is forming, and the final roster decisions could play a significant role in shaping the Tar Heels’ outlook for the upcoming season.
