MAJOR ADDITION: Rangers Pull Off Huge Move With Stunning Trade for All-Star Pitcher

The Texas Rangers once again failed to reach the playoffs this past season after struggling to perform consistently throughout the year.

With the offseason approaching, Texas faces several important decisions regarding its roster. One of the biggest concerns is the starting rotation, an area the front office will need to strengthen if the team hopes to compete again.

The Rangers have been disappointed with their results in recent seasons, missing the postseason for three consecutive years. This offseason could reveal a great deal about the franchise’s direction, and the decisions made over the coming months could significantly impact the team’s chances in 2027.

Rangers Linked to Yankees Star

In a recent article for Bleacher Report, MLB analyst Kerry Miller suggested that Texas should pursue New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil. With Gil potentially falling outside the Yankees’ long-term rotation plans, the Rangers could have an opportunity to acquire the former Rookie of the Year.

“Both Nathan Eovaldi and MacKenzie Gore will be free agents next winter, while the Rangers will need to decide whether exercising a $20M club option for what will be Jacob deGrom’s age-40 season is a good idea. Even ignoring that 2028 dilemma, though, they could really use another arm for 2027, as they don’t have a single returning pitcher (even including that big three) who made at least six starts with a sub-4.20 ERA in 2026. The Yankees sure do have a surplus of starting pitchers, though, and would probably be willing to part with the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year,” Miller wrote.

Gil could offer Texas a valuable long-term option on the mound, as the right-hander remains under team control for several more seasons. He has three years of arbitration eligibility remaining and is projected to earn approximately $2.3 million for the 2027 campaign.

During the 2026 season with New York, Gil recorded a 4.61 ERA across nine appearances, including four starts. He logged 27.1 innings while striking out 17 batters.

Should Texas Make This Trade?

If Gil becomes available on the trade market this offseason, the Rangers should seriously consider pursuing him. He could provide additional depth for the 2027 rotation while offering the team a pitcher it can retain for multiple seasons.

Texas needs to find a way back into the playoff picture, and improving its pitching depth will be an important part of that process. Gil has already demonstrated his potential by winning the American League Rookie of the Year award, giving the Rangers reason to believe he could regain his previous form, particularly with a fresh start in a new organization.

The pressure of playing for the Yankees can be challenging for some players, and a move to Texas might provide Gil with an opportunity to perform in a different environment. As the Rangers work toward becoming contenders again, taking a chance on a pitcher with his potential could prove to be a worthwhile move.

Ultimately, Gil appears to be a reasonable target for Texas, especially given the numerous questions surrounding its starting rotation heading into the offseason. Acquiring him might not require a significant trade package, and the Rangers could potentially land a long-term rotation piece who still has room to improve.
