Major Breaking: Former NY Rangers HC Peter Laviolette Landing New Job with Hated Rival

Peter Laviolette, the former head coach of the New York Rangers, is reportedly eager to return to the NHL after feeling he wasn’t to blame for the team’s struggles this past season. According to Elliotte Friedman of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Laviolette is determined to show that he still has what it takes to succeed at the NHL level.

“He wants to prove that last season’s collapse wasn’t on him,” Friedman said. “He believes the issues with the Rangers ran deeper than coaching. Laviolette has a reputation as someone who can quickly turn teams around—he’s known for strong first-year performances, and that mindset is definitely still there. People around the league know it.”

Despite a strong regular season in his first year behind the bench, which included winning the Presidents’ Trophy and setting a franchise record with 55 wins, the Rangers fell short in the Eastern Conference Final. It was a disappointing end for a team that had eyes on its first Stanley Cup Final appearance since 1994.

The Rangers started the season hot, leading the Metropolitan Division in the early going, but internal issues and off-ice distractions began to surface as the season progressed, contributing to their eventual downfall.

The Rangers have since filled their coaching vacancy with former Penguins head coach—and former Rangers assistant—Mike Sullivan.

Other NHL teams still searching for a new coach

Laviolette remains a top candidate for several other NHL teams still searching for a new bench boss. Franchises such as the Chicago Blackhawks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins, and Vancouver Canucks are all reportedly in the market for a head coach.

Given Laviolette’s track record of quick turnarounds and his extensive experience, it’s likely he’ll receive interest from multiple teams. With his proven credentials and a clear desire to redeem himself, Laviolette appears ready for another opportunity—and he’s bringing a chip on his shoulder that could be exactly what a team in transition needs.
