The St. Louis Cardinals’ outfield outlook has shifted dramatically as young players continue to push their way into the major league picture during the club’s ongoing rebuild.
Joshua Baez’s breakout was especially significant, as his record-setting rookie debut immediately gave St. Louis another compelling option to consider when shaping its future lineup.
His rapid rise is even more remarkable given where his prospect standing was just a few years ago.

The decision is somewhat surprising considering his recent struggles at the plate, which eventually led him to play overseas. That stint, however, also failed to generate much success.
“Madris is back with the Cardinals after hitting .175 (11-for-63) with four homers in 17 games for the SSG Landers in Korea,” George Bissell noted for NBC Sports. “The 30-year-old outfielder hasn’t appeared in the majors since the 2024 campaign. He’s merely organizational depth at this stage of his career.”
Madris has major league experience with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers, although his production at that level has been limited. Across 206 career at-bats, he owns a .204/.273/.286 slash line with two home runs and 12 RBI.

Madris has also earned several notable honors throughout his baseball career, even though he has not won a major league award. His most significant accomplishment came on June 20, 2022, when he made his major league debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates and became the first MLB player of Palauan descent. The historic milestone gave Madris a unique place in baseball history and represented an important moment for Palauan heritage in the sport.
Madris Earned Major Recognition During His College Career
Before reaching professional baseball, Madris established himself as one of the most accomplished players in Division II baseball during his time at Colorado Mesa University. In 2017, he was named a finalist for the Tino Martinez Award, which recognizes the most outstanding player in Division II baseball, after producing an exceptional season in which he batted .422 with 17 home runs.
His collegiate accomplishments began even earlier. Madris was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2015 and also earned RMAC Tournament MVP honors after helping lead his team to a conference tournament championship. Throughout his college career, he received multiple All-Region and All-RMAC selections, establishing himself as one of the program’s most decorated players.
Those accomplishments provide additional context to Madris’ professional journey. While he has yet to establish himself as a consistent major league contributor, his path from a standout collegiate player to the first player of Palauan descent in MLB demonstrates the perseverance that has defined his career.
