Portal Alert: Wildcats Land Battle-Tested Center for 2026–27

During a recent round of fan Q&A on social media, Kentucky head coach Mark Pope made it clear his staff was aggressively searching the transfer portal for frontcourt help—specifically a reliable backup center who could provide experience, toughness, and stability. That search didn’t last long.

Kentucky has officially landed former Washington center who signed with the Wildcats ahead of the 2026–27 season, according to UK Sports Network. The move gives Pope an immediate solution in the paint and adds a seasoned presence to a roster that could be facing transition up front.

Kepnang arrives in Lexington with one of the more unique résumés in college basketball. Now 24 years old, the veteran big man spent two seasons at Oregon before transferring to Washington, where he played four years with the Huskies. His extended college career has allowed him to gain valuable experience across multiple systems, conferences, and roles—something Kentucky clearly values as it reshapes its roster.

Last season marked Kepnang’s most significant opportunity, as he started 25 games for Washington. He averaged 6.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, bringing consistent effort on the glass and a physical interior presence on both ends of the floor. While his numbers may not jump off the stat sheet, his impact often showed up in the less glamorous areas—screen-setting, rebounding battles, interior defense, and providing stability when things got chaotic.

Kepnang is now seeking a seventh season of college basketball, and Kentucky will give him that chance. His addition comes at an important time for the Wildcats, as Malachi Moreno is currently going through the NBA Draft process and could be playing professionally next season. With uncertainty surrounding Moreno’s return, Kepnang offers much-needed depth, insurance, and experience in the frontcourt.

For a Kentucky team looking to balance youth with maturity, Kepnang represents a low-risk, high-value addition. He may not be the flashiest name in the portal, but his experience and reliability could prove vital over the grind of an SEC season.
