Eddie Howe’s effect at Newcastle United has led to speculation about him being a potential successor to Gareth Southgate as England’s head coach, and Darren Bent has weighed in.
Eddie Howe has been informed that there is ‘no way on this world’ he will quit Newcastle United to succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager. Darren Bent believes the former Bournemouth manager is more than capable of leading the Magpies to silverware.
Following his appointment in November 2021, Howe has supervised a huge makeover of the squad and has managed a fantastic turnaround at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United have qualified for the Champions League for the first time in two decades, as they thrashed Paris Saint-Germain to go to the top of Group F after two continental games.
Following the international break, the Magpies face Crystal Palace at home, with speculation about Southgate’s future with England resurfacing. According to reports, the Three Lions manager could step down after Euro 2024, with Pep Guardiola among the possible candidates.
Howe’sĀ stint on Tyneside so far has inevitably seen the 45-year-old tipped as a potential future England manager. However, Bent feels the Newcastle head coach should not trade his current post for the opportunity to lead his country in the coming years.
BentĀ told talkSPORT: “There is no way on this planet…if I’m Eddie Howe, I’m not leaving Newcastle for the England job. Absolutely not.
“Not a chance. Eddie Howe may leave Newcastle and travel to England without working out. Give me a team from the Champions League.
When questioned by colleague presenter Andy Goldstein, Bent admitted that England are currently more probable than Newcastle to win a big international competition. “They might not win it,” the former England international added. We’ve been discussing the same topic since 1966. Newcastle, please.”
