Newcastle United are not actively in the chase for Real Betis star Juan Miranda, according to Fabrizio Romano – with the 23-year-old instead poised to join Milan in Serie A.
Miranda is a left-back who began his career at Betis before joining Barcelona’s junior system in 2014. He went on to make four first-team appearances for Barcelona, as well as 12 for German club Schalke during a loan spell in the 2019-20 season.
Miranda then went on loan to Betis the next season, where he impressed enough to earn a permanent move to the Benito Villamarin Stadium in the summer of 2021.
The former Spain U21 international has established himself as a fixture in Betis’ starting lineup. His outstanding achievements in La Liga have even sparked speculation that he could join Newcastle in the January transfer window.
However, in an interview with CaughtOffside, Romano has ended that speculation. Instead, the journalist has explained how Miranda is far more likely to sign for Milan.
“AC Milan are informed on the situation of Juan Miranda. They’re keeping tabs on the Real Betis left-back, waiting to see what happens,” he said.
“Milan is definitely considering him for their list. While there have been rumors, I am not aware of any proposals from Newcastle at this point, but the situation remains open.”
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe currently has Dan Burn, Matt Targett, and Lewis Hall as options for the left side of the defense. Before they signed Hall from Chelsea over the summer, there were speculations that Newcastle might sign Kieran Tierney, who instead went on loan to Real Sociedad from Arsenal.
Although Howe has several players for the position, it does make sense for Newcastle to be in the market for potential improvements in that area. While Burn put in an impressive performance against Paris Saint-Germain and played a key role in Newcastle’s 4-1 victory, he is now 31 years old.
Newcastle might benefit from a more agile and attacking left-back if they aim to compete with teams like Manchester City and Arsenal in the upcoming seasons. Targett may not meet that standard, and Hall, while showing great potential, is still in the development phase.
Considering these factors, it’s understandable that Newcastle has been linked with a move for Miranda. However, it seems that Betis’ Miranda is not the player Newcastle is pursuing, as they may have another left-back in mind.
