Following the Premier League’s vote this week, Newcastle will be free to sign players from Saudi Arabia in January.
The Magpies have recently been linked with a deal for Ruben Neves, but it doesn’t appear that will happen anytime soon.
However, another midfielder in the Middle East could be on their way to St James’ Park soon.
On the Premier League All Access Podcast, Alex Crook discussed possible prospective January additions at Newcastle, and he claims Gabri Veiga is one to watch, adding that he’s a guy Newcastle greatly admires and sought in the summer.
Veiga one to watch
Crook spoke about the £34m midfielder and Newcastle’s plans.
“I think they’re still worried with how they’re perceived, but it would be a surprise for me if they didn’t take at least one player from Saudi in January. It might not be Ruben Neves, Al-Hilal are keen to keep him. But Gabri Veiga was a player who was very much in their sights this summer and it was a bit of a surprise at such a young age that he went to Saudi, so I’d keep an eye on that one,” Crook said.
Would make sense
It has to be said that this one would make the world of sense.
Let’s be honest: Gabri Veiga shouldn’t be in Saudi Arabia in the first place.
The Saudi League is improving, but it is still primarily a retirement home for fading elite stars.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and N’Golo Kante have all had their moments in the spotlight, but Veiga, at the age of 21, should have his entire career ahead of him, and he’ll be best served playing in Europe.
The young Spaniard is undoubtedly a player to watch in January.
