Newcastle United defender suffers ‘significant’ injury blow and will now be investigated

Newcastle United injuries: Harrison Ashby has returned to the club following a hamstring injury during his loan spell at Swansea City.

Harrison Ashby has suffered a’significant’ injury setback while on loan at Swansea City.

In the summer, Ashby joined Swansea City on a season-long loan from Newcastle. The 22-year-old has yet to make his competitive debut for The Magpies after joining from West Ham United in January for about £3 million.

This season, the right-back has made 13 appearances for Swansea in all competitions, scoring his first professional goal against Preston North End in August. Ashby last played in a 2-2 draw against Hull City at home last month, but he only lasted 10 minutes before being forced off with a hamstring injury.

Swansea manager Michael Duff classified Ashby’s injury as’significant’ after the Hull game, before releasing more information the following week. Ashby has returned to Newcastle after undergoing a scan to determine the extent of his injuries.

“He’s had a scan,” Duff said. “I don’t know 100 per cent the diagnosis on it, but the two clubs are now talking. He’s gone back to Newcastle for the time being.

“He’s their player, so they want to investigate a bit more into what it actually is. Ultimately, from my point of view, he’s not available for the next two or three weeks. Until they do this investigation we’re not quite sure where it’s at.”
The Magpies may have been tempted to recall Ashby from Swansea in January, given their own injury issue, which now has 11 players out. However, the full-back is expected to return to Swansea once he has recovered.
