Buccaneers QB Mayfield Makes Feelings Clear About New Teammate Graham Barton

Mayfield is clearly pleased to have another big man up front guarding him.
When a team improves the trenches on the offensive side of the ball, the quarterback is sure to be pleased.

Naturally, Baker Mayfield was ecstatic when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Duke inside offensive lineman Graham Barton in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft. When asked how Mayfield felt about the pick, Bucs general manager Jason Licht provided an understandable response.

“[Mayfield] contacted me after we selected him,” Licht stated on Thursday. “You know, quarterbacks get excited when you put large people in front of them and keep them standing. “He was thrilled.”

He should be. Not only will Barton help protect Baker Mayfield in the passing game, but a strong presence up front should help Rachaad White and company in the run game as well. Barton is set to play center at the next level, so he will undoubtedly develop a relationship with Mayfield in the near future.

Robert Hainsey, Mayfield’s center last year, will now compete for a position at guard with the addition of Barton. Licht could possibly satisfy Mayfield even more by picking a guard on Day 2 or Day 3, perhaps adding another promising rookie to the offensive line behind Barton and second-year guard Cody Mauch.
