Kansas State head coach Collin Klein has never limited himself geographically when searching for football talent. He will evaluate prospects from anywhere in the country if they can help elevate the program. Still, at the core of his recruiting philosophy is a clear and consistent belief: the Wildcats must dominate their own region first.

Since arriving in Manhattan, Klein has been vocal about prioritizing talent close to home. He has repeatedly stressed the importance of building strong recruiting pipelines in areas where Kansas State has historical ties and natural advantages. His vision centers on a roughly seven-hour recruiting radius surrounding campus — a footprint that includes major talent hubs such as Denver, Omaha, Des Moines, Kansas City, St. Louis, Tulsa, and Oklahoma City. Klein believes that circle consistently produces high-level players who fit the Wildcats’ culture, development model, and physical style of play.

That philosophy was reinforced in a major way over the weekend.
Kansas State landed a commitment from a dynamic athlete from Great Bend who currently stands as the top-ranked prospect in the state of Kansas for the 2027 recruiting cycle. Measuring 6 feet tall and 185 pounds, Ohnmacht has already earned four-star status and is widely regarded as one of the most complete all-around athletes in the region.
Ohnmacht is viewed as a defensive chess piece with college-ready traits. While most projections place him at safety, his combination of speed, instincts, and physicality gives him the versatility to contribute at multiple positions. His commitment came after a campus visit that clearly solidified Kansas State as his top choice, despite heavy national interest.
The recruitment was highly competitive. Ohnmacht held scholarship offers from several Power Four programs, including Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Minnesota, Penn State, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin. Locking down the state’s premier prospect over that level of competition represents a significant recruiting win for Klein and his staff.
Both 247Sports and Rivals rank Ohnmacht as the No. 1 overall player in Kansas for his class, underscoring the importance of the pledge not just locally, but nationally.
Kansas State’s momentum didn’t stop with one commitment.
The Wildcats also added Correll Buckhalter, a powerful 5-foot-10, 190-pound running back from Colleyville, Texas. Buckhalter is rated as a three-star prospect and brings a compact build, strong lower body, and downhill running style that aligns well with Kansas State’s offensive identity. He chose the Wildcats over scholarship offers from Arkansas, Iowa, SMU, and UCLA.
With these additions, Kansas State now holds 17 commitments in its 2027 recruiting class — and the surge has been recent and dramatic. Seven of those pledges have come within the past week, signaling a rapid acceleration on the recruiting trail and growing confidence in Klein’s long-term vision.
Early returns suggest that Kansas State is executing a clear, disciplined recruiting strategy: secure elite in-state talent, win key regional battles, and selectively expand into talent-rich areas beyond state lines. As the 2027 class continues to take shape, the Wildcats are positioning themselves with both depth and upside — and doing so by staying true to their roots.
