The Toronto Blue Jays entered the trade deadline facing significant uncertainty with several key starting pitchers nearing free agency. Many expected the club’s rotation to take a major step backward as it prepared for the final two months of the 2026 season.
Instead, Toronto reshaped its pitching staff through a series of bold deadline moves, adding both promising young arms and experienced veterans to soften the blow of losing key contributors. As a result, the Blue Jays may have assembled a rotation capable of exceeding expectations during the stretch run.
Replacing Kevin Gausman initially looked like an impossible task. Over the past four seasons, the veteran right-hander consistently proved himself in big moments, establishing himself as one of Toronto’s most dependable starters. Losing that type of presence seemed certain to leave a major void.
However, the Blue Jays may have found an even more impactful solution by acquiring José Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels. At just 27 years old, Soriano possesses the talent to develop into a true frontline starter, and he has already put together the strongest campaign of his career.
While with the Angels this season, Soriano posted a 9-6 record along with a 3.29 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP and 127 strikeouts across 123 innings, giving Toronto an arm that has already been performing at a high level.
The biggest concern surrounding Soriano remains his command. He has issued 57 walks this season, the highest total among American League starters in 2026. But the Blue Jays have successfully corrected similar issues before. Robbie Ray dramatically improved his control after arriving in Toronto in 2021, eventually producing a Cy Young-winning season. If the organization can help Soriano make similar adjustments, his ceiling could rise even higher.
Based on this year’s production alone, Soriano has outperformed what Gausman delivered for Toronto throughout the season, making him an immediate upgrade to the club’s starting rotation heading into the playoff push.
Blue Jays Bolster Rotation Depth Beyond José Soriano
Toronto’s work didn’t stop with Soriano. The club also strengthened its pitching depth by bringing in Jameson Taillon and Spencer Arrighetti.
Before those additions, any rotation injuries likely would have forced the Blue Jays to rely on inexperienced prospects from the minor leagues. Now, they have two proven major league starters who can step into the rotation whenever needed, giving the club valuable depth without sacrificing experience.
As surprising as it may seem, Toronto could actually be in a stronger position now than it was before Gausman’s departure.
The Blue Jays now feature a rotation led by Soriano, Dylan Cease, Shane Bieber, Trey Yesavage and Max Scherzer, while Taillon and Arrighetti remain available as reliable reinforcements whenever necessary. What looked like a potential weakness only days ago has quickly turned into a position of strength, giving Toronto a legitimate opportunity to finish the season on a high note. At the very least, reaching the .500 mark now appears to be a realistic goal.
