The New York Rangers may not be finished reshaping their roster this offseason, and a new report suggests one of their promising young forwards could become a target for a familiar Western Conference rival.
According to reports, the Edmonton Oilers are monitoring the Rangers’ roster as they continue searching for ways to improve their forward group. Following another disappointing postseason, Edmonton is believed to be exploring younger, cost-controlled options, and one Rangers forward has reportedly caught the attention of people around the organization.
The Oilers have already undergone significant changes this summer as they attempt to rebound from another unsuccessful Stanley Cup pursuit. While much of their focus has been on strengthening their depth, an insider believes they could look toward New York for help.
The player generating the speculation is 23-year-old forward Brett Berard, who impressed in limited NHL action while continuing to establish himself as one of the Rangers’ most intriguing young forwards. Although Berard has yet to secure a full-time top-six role, his speed, relentless forechecking, and affordable contract make him an attractive trade target for teams looking to add youthful energy.
According to Oilers insider Bob Stauffer, Edmonton should consider making a push for Berard if the Rangers become willing to move him.
“I think a player like Brett Berard would make a lot of sense for Edmonton,” Stauffer suggested while discussing potential trade targets. “He’s got speed, competes hard, and fits the type of player they like.”
From New York’s perspective, moving Berard would not be an easy decision.
The Rangers are entering another important season under head coach Mike Sullivan and are expected to rely more heavily on younger talent following several veteran departures over the past year. Berard remains one of the organization’s better internal options to provide inexpensive scoring depth while bringing energy to the bottom six.
At the same time, Rangers general manager Chris Drury has shown throughout the offseason that he is willing to make aggressive moves if they improve the club’s long-term outlook. If Edmonton presents an attractive package, New York could at least listen despite Berard’s potential.
The Oilers also have reasons to pursue younger players after seeing several depth forwards depart in free agency. Adding someone like Berard would allow Edmonton to inject speed into its lineup without committing significant salary-cap space, an important factor for a team managing expensive superstar contracts.
There is currently no indication that formal trade discussions have taken place between the two clubs. Instead, the report points to Edmonton’s interest and the belief that Berard would be a logical fit if the Rangers decide to make additional roster moves before training camp.
For now, Berard remains part of the Rangers’ plans heading into the 2026-27 season. However, with the NHL offseason still active and both franchises looking to strengthen their lineups, his name could continue to surface in trade speculation over the coming weeks.
