The St. Louis Cardinals have spent much of the 2026 season searching for consistency on the mound, and their pitching depth has taken another significant hit. Just weeks after promoting one of their promising young arms to the major leagues, the organization has now received discouraging news that could keep the rookie sidelined well into the future.
The setback comes at a difficult time for St. Louis, which has relied on roster adjustments throughout the season while trying to stabilize both its rotation and bullpen. Although the club remains hopeful about the long-term outlook, the latest development means another young pitcher faces a lengthy road back.
The Relief pitcher who made his MLB debut on June 18, shared an encouraging update after previously landing on the 15-day injured list on July 6 before being transferred to the 60-day IL with a right elbow injury.
“I just had a successful UCL reconstruction surgery done by Dr. Keith Meister. I can’t wait to get back out on the field, play the game I love, and be with my teammates,” He wrote on Instagram.
The procedure will likely sideline the 24-year-old for most, if not all, of the 2027 season. If his recovery stays on track, he could return during the 2028 campaign at age 26.
While the injury is a major setback, Max Rajcic is still early in his professional career, giving him a chance to return during what should be his prime seasons.
His first taste of the majors was a difficult one. Before suffering the injury, Rajcic surrendered runs in four of his six appearances. Still, his track record throughout the Cardinals’ farm system suggests there is reason for optimism.
St. Louis selected Rajcic in the sixth round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of UCLA. He broke out during the 2023 season while splitting time between High-A Peoria and Single-A Palm Beach, posting a 9-6 record with a 2.48 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP, and 123 strikeouts over 123 1/3 innings in 23 starts. His dominant performance earned him the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year award.
His production dipped after advancing to Double-A and Triple-A, prompting the Cardinals to transition him into a bullpen role in 2026. The move paid off, as he excelled with Triple-A Memphis, compiling a 4-2 record, a 2.88 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, and 46 strikeouts across 40 2/3 innings in 26 appearances, including one start.
That performance earned him a promotion to St. Louis, where he appeared in six games and allowed five earned runs on six hits, including one home run, while issuing six walks and striking out eight over nine innings before the elbow injury ended his season.
Rajcic’s absence adds another challenge for a Cardinals bullpen that has been inconsistent throughout 2026. While All-Star closer Riley O’Brien has been a bright spot, the relief corps has posted a 4.21 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 374 innings this season. By comparison, St. Louis’ starting rotation has recorded a slightly better 4.07 ERA and 1.30 WHIP.
With one of the organization’s young bullpen arms now beginning a lengthy rehabilitation process, the Cardinals will have to continue searching for reliable depth as they look ahead to the remainder of the season and beyond.
