The St. Louis Cardinals are entering the final stretch before the MLB trade deadline with important decisions looming over the direction of the franchise. Whether the front office ultimately buys, sells, or takes a more balanced approach, the club is expected to explore opportunities that strengthen both the current roster and its long-term outlook.
If St. Louis decides to add talent, the focus could be on acquiring players who not only address immediate needs but also remain under team control beyond this season. One intriguing name that has surfaced is Colorado Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle, whom Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently identified as a strong fit for the Cardinals.
According to Miller, Doyle represents an appealing buy-low candidate despite an injury-plagued campaign that has diminished his trade value.
“Speaking of guys who have been on the IL since mid-May, remember Brenton Doyle? All trade deadline eyes fixated on Colorado have been on All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman, but Doyle was pretty great two years ago, amassing 23 home runs and 30 stolen bases while securing his second consecutive Gold Glove in center,” Miller wrote. “Granted, he had a .900 OPS at Coors Field compared to a .636 mark everywhere else, but he looked like a star in the making.
“Unfortunately, he took a big step backward (with even worse home/road splits) in 2025 and has missed most of this season to oblique and groin injuries. He just started a rehab assignment on Thursday, though, so he could be back in the majors just in time for the trade deadline. That isn’t to say they’re eager to give Doyle away for nothing, but he is already one of their 10 highest-paid players, in a position group where they arguably have a surplus of viable options. If either the Cardinals or the Orioles are buying, Doyle could be a great fit there.”
Doyle’s production has fallen well below the standards he established earlier in his career. Across 43 games this season, the 28-year-old is batting .207/.279/.270 with one home run and four RBIs, numbers largely influenced by extended absences caused by oblique and groin injuries.
Despite those struggles, Doyle remains an intriguing trade candidate because of the tools that made him one of baseball’s most promising defensive outfielders. His combination of elite center-field defense, speed, and past offensive production gives him considerable upside if he can regain his health. He is also under team control through the 2029 season, making him more than just a short-term rental.
That long-term control could make Doyle especially attractive for a Cardinals club looking to improve its outfield without sacrificing future roster flexibility. While Colorado is unlikely to move him for a minimal return, his recent injuries and offensive decline could keep his acquisition cost well below what it would have been a year or two ago.
With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, St. Louis will soon reveal whether it intends to strengthen its roster for a postseason push. If the Cardinals decide to pursue value over splash, Doyle could emerge as one of the most sensible buy-low targets available.
