BREAKING: Former Cubs Infielder, World Series Champ, Returns After Retirement Decision

The Chicago Cubs continue to battle through a difficult stretch, recently falling back to the .500 mark for the first time since April as injuries on the pitching staff and inconsistent offensive production have taken a toll.

Still, Cubs fans received some uplifting news this week as a familiar face from the 2023 roster completed an inspiring return to the major leagues after a cancer battle and a near-retirement decision threatened to end his career.

“For the first time in three years, Trey Mancini is in the big leagues,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco reported. “The Angels selected the veteran first baseman onto the MLB roster before tonight’s series opener with the Astros. Mancini is starting at first base and batting seventh against his old team, who are sending Spencer Arrighetti to the mound.”

Mancini, who enjoyed some of the best years of his career with the Baltimore Orioles and captured a World Series title with the Houston Astros in 2022, last appeared in the majors with the Cubs during the 2023 season. After being released late that year, he spent time working through multiple minor-league opportunities in an effort to earn another shot.

Not long after returning to the major leagues, Mancini revealed just how close he came to stepping away from baseball altogether.

“I thought I was retired for good,” Mancini said during a recent appearance on Foul Territory. “I was getting ready to announce it.”

The admission adds even more significance to what has become one of baseball’s most remarkable comeback stories. Mancini’s journey has included much more than the normal challenges of staying in the game.

“The demand for first basemen in their mid-30s isn’t terribly great,” Ken Rosenthal wrote for The Athletic following Mancini’s return. “He also had the perspective of a cancer survivor. Mancini missed the shortened 2020 season after undergoing Stage 3 colon cancer surgery.”

Remarkably, Mancini made an immediate impact after rejoining the Angels. He collected three hits in his first game back, marking the first time he reached that total in a single game since July 2023, when he was still with the Cubs.

What comes next for Mancini remains unclear.

The Angels could ultimately view him as a temporary option, but considering everything he has overcome—including cancer treatment, years away from the majors, and a retirement announcement that nearly became reality—his return alone stands as a major accomplishment.

For a player who genuinely believed his career had come to an end, getting another opportunity on a major-league field serves as a powerful reminder that baseball careers can take unexpected turns, and perseverance can sometimes lead to one more chance.
