A few weeks ago, the Seattle Mariners were dealt a major blow when shortstop J.P. Crawford went down with a wrist injury, forcing him to remain sidelined for an extended period. Now, the team has provided a promising update on his recovery timeline as he begins working his way back toward a return.
According to MLB.com’s Brent Maguire, Crawford has officially started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma. The veteran infielder took the field on Aug. 20, going 0-for-3 at the plate while playing five innings at shortstop as he begins rebuilding his game readiness.
Mariners manager Dan Wilson explained that Crawford will likely need additional time in Triple-A before rejoining the major league roster. Seattle appears determined to make sure he is fully prepared before activating him, especially after the team experienced another injury absence from Crawford earlier this season.
This is not Crawford’s first trip to the injured list in 2026. Earlier in the year, he missed time because of a triceps issue and needed nearly a month before returning to action. That previous setback could be one reason the Mariners are taking a cautious approach with his latest recovery, prioritizing his long-term availability over a rushed comeback.
Before the injury, Crawford was enduring a difficult offensive season. Through 88 games, he has posted a .212 batting average with 10 home runs, 30 RBIs, and 38 runs scored. Those numbers represent a decline from his 2025 campaign, when he hit .265 with 12 homers, 58 RBIs, and 69 runs.
Seattle’s playoff situation also adds urgency to Crawford’s return. The Mariners entered this stretch at 60-68, sitting three games behind the final American League wild-card position. Although they remain within striking distance, their offense has been one of the biggest issues throughout the season.

The Mariners currently rank near the bottom of MLB in several offensive categories, including batting average, on-base percentage, runs scored, and slugging percentage. With the postseason race entering its final phase, Seattle knows it needs every possible contributor healthy.
When Crawford does return, the Mariners will hope the extra preparation time allows him to regain his form and provide stability at shortstop during a critical push toward the playoffs. The team’s patience could prove important if he is able to come back at full strength for the final weeks of the season.
