With every game becoming more meaningful down the stretch, Chicago made a major bullpen move before its series against the Mariners, bringing back one of its most important late-inning weapons after a lengthy absence. After missing more than two months because of an elbow injury, Daniel Palencia was officially activated from the 60-day injured list ahead of Chicago’s matchup with Seattle. The 26-year-old reliever had been one of the Cubs’ most dependable bullpen arms before the setback, and his return immediately gave manager Craig Counsell another valuable option during high-pressure moments.
The move comes at a critical point in the season. Chicago entered the Mariners series trying to close the gap in the National League Central race while maintaining control of its Wild Card position. Adding a proven late-game reliever could become a difference-maker as the Cubs navigate the final weeks of the regular season.
However, Palencia’s return comes with a surprising twist. While he is back on the active roster, Counsell made it clear that the right-hander will not immediately step back into his previous closer role. Instead, the Cubs plan to gradually work him back into the bullpen mix and use him in key situations as he rebuilds his rhythm.
Before his injury, Palencia had continued to prove why he was such an important part of Chicago’s plans. In 19 appearances this season, he posted a 2-1 record with a 2.70 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, and three saves. His return gives the Cubs another arm capable of handling high-leverage innings.
To make room for Palencia, Chicago also made several roster changes, adding Gabriel Arias to the 26-man roster, optioning Javier Assad to Triple-A Iowa, and designating Owen Miller for assignment.
The Cubs are hoping the timing of Palencia’s return can provide a late-season boost as they chase postseason success. With the Mariners series serving as another important test, Chicago’s bullpen just received a reinforcement that could have a major impact on the final stretch.
