Everton have moved quickly with the club reaching an agreement to sign former Liverpool midfielder.
The Blues have reportedly secured a deal for the 23-year-old, bringing an end to the uncertainty surrounding his future after a number of Premier League clubs had been linked with the midfielder. Morton had attracted interest from several sides, including Newcastle United, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Brighton.
Liverpool were also reportedly interested in bringing their former academy player back to Anfield, but Everton have now won the race for his signature and agreed terms for Morton to make the move to Goodison Park.
The deal represents a significant addition to David Moyes’ midfield options, with Morton bringing previous Premier League and Championship experience as well as his time playing in France with Lyon.
Everton supporters will now be looking forward to seeing Morton join the squad, with the midfielder set to provide another option in the centre of the pitch as the Blues prepare for the next stage of the season.
Morton left Liverpool in August 2025, bringing an end to his time with the club where he came through the academy. The midfielder made 14 senior appearances for the Reds before completing a permanent move to Lyon.
Since arriving in France, Morton has established himself as a regular part of the Lyon squad and has continued to develop his game. He has made 10 appearances across all competitions this season, accumulating 789 minutes of playing time.
The 23-year-old also has considerable experience of English football outside Liverpool. Morton spent full Championship campaigns on loan with Blackburn Rovers and Hull City, giving him a strong understanding of the demands of the English game before his eventual move abroad.
His reported availability on the radar of several Premier League clubs makes his situation one for Everton supporters to keep an eye on, although midfield does not currently appear to be the most pressing area for David Moyes to address.
Everton already have James Garner, Hayden Hackney, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Harrison Armstrong competing for midfield places, providing Moyes with several options in the position.
There could be greater urgency elsewhere in the squad, particularly in attack, where Everton currently lack a natural alternative to centre-forward Thierno Barry.
Much can change between now and the opening of the January window, and Morton’s situation could become one to monitor if the interest reported from Premier League clubs develops further.
For now, however, the claim only points to Everton tracking the midfielder rather than making an approach, with no talks believed to have taken place with Lyon.
