North Carolina’s coaching staff has officially completed another significant addition to next season’s roster, continuing its aggressive offseason overhaul by securing one of the top available frontcourt pieces. Even after many believed the Tar Heels had already filled their final scholarship spot, the program stayed active behind the scenes and has now landed another experienced contributor to strengthen its interior.
The move comes after widespread expectations that Angelo Brizzi had occupied the final roster spot. Instead, the Tar Heels continued working behind the scenes to finalize another addition. Assistant coaches Sean May and Chuck Martin played key roles throughout the recruitment, maintaining consistent contact with the former Florida center before ultimately convincing him to commit to Chapel Hill.
According to Locked On Tar Heels podcast host Isaas Schade, North Carolina’s pursuit had been underway for several weeks, with the coaching staff doing an impressive job of keeping the recruitment out of the spotlight until everything was finalized.
“I caught wind through a source that things were ramping up again,” Schade said. “I didn’t say anything because the source asked me to keep it under wraps, and I wanted to respect that. I don’t want to burn sources, and I want them to trust me. Once others started reporting it and Inside Carolina began discussing it, it became clear this was a legitimate development.”
Schade’s report has now been validated, as North Carolina has successfully completed the signing, adding another experienced veteran to its roster ahead of the upcoming season.
The addition became possible after Micah Handlogten secured the eligibility needed to return for another year of college basketball, clearing the final hurdle in the recruitment process. With that resolved, North Carolina wasted no time finalizing the move and bringing one of the most experienced frontcourt players available to Chapel Hill.
His arrival immediately addresses one of the Tar Heels’ biggest remaining needs. North Carolina’s frontcourt depth took a hit after Henri Veesaar departed for the Atlanta Hawks, leaving promising but relatively inexperienced options such as Sayon Keita, Alexandros Samodurov, and Cade Bannerman. The newest addition gives the Tar Heels an experienced anchor capable of providing stability in the paint.
Standing 7-foot-1, the former Florida standout has built a reputation as a reliable defensive presence and one of the better rebounders in college basketball. His size, experience, and ability to protect the rim should make him an immediate contributor while providing valuable leadership for North Carolina’s younger frontcourt players.
By completing the signing, the Tar Heels have added exactly the type of veteran presence they were seeking. The move strengthens the roster heading into next season and gives North Carolina another proven interior player as the program continues building toward championship expectations under Michael Malone.
