The St. Louis Cardinals have endured a difficult stretch that has significantly damaged their postseason hopes, but one of the organization’s top young arms is providing fresh optimism for the future. While the club continues to navigate uncertainty ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline, a rising pitching prospect has forced his way into the conversation with an outstanding turnaround in Triple-A.
After a challenging start to the season, the talented left-hander steadily found his rhythm and emerged as one of the hottest pitchers in the minor leagues. He struggled to a 5.85 ERA during May with Triple-A Memphis before making dramatic improvements in June, lowering that figure to 2.05 ERA across five starts.
His dominance reached another level in July. The 2023 fourth-round draft selection out of Stanford recorded a sparkling 1.04 ERA in four starts while consistently working deep into games, completing at least six innings in each of his last four outings. Across the entire season, he has showcased elite swing-and-miss ability, piling up 111 strikeouts in 92 innings for Memphis.
That remarkable improvement earned him the call every prospect dreams about.
“The Cardinals will promote left-hander Quinn Mathews, their No. 7 prospect, from Triple-A Memphis to start on Saturday in Toronto,” manager Oliver Marmol confirmed. The promotion also requires Mathews to be added to the club’s 40-man roster ahead of his Major League debut against the Blue Jays.
The Cardinals are not expected to make any other immediate changes to their starting rotation. Rather than replacing an established starter, Mathews is simply being inserted into the rotation for this turn, giving the club added flexibility.
Adding Mathews for Saturday’s start allows St. Louis to push the remainder of its rotation back by one day. That move also avoids having Dustin May, whose postgame embraces with teammates following five scoreless innings on Wednesday fueled speculation surrounding his future ahead of the Trade Deadline, scheduled to pitch on Monday’s deadline day.
Marmol has also reiterated that Matthew Liberatore will remain in the rotation for his next scheduled outing.
What comes next for Mathews beyond his debut remains uncertain, especially with the Cardinals expected to be active before the Trade Deadline. However, if the club ultimately moves pitching in potential deals, Saturday’s start could be only the beginning of the 25-year-old’s opportunities at the Major League level this season.
