East Carolina University catcher/designated hitter has entered the NCAA transfer portal following the conclusion of the 2026 season, becoming the latest ECU baseball player to explore opportunities elsewhere this offseason.
The sophomore from Longwood, Florida, appeared in 44 games with 24 starts for the Pirates and was one of the team’s more productive offensive bats, especially late in the year. After struggling early in the season, he finished strong with a surge at the plate that boosted his overall numbers significantly.
Michael Kalinich ended the season batting .323 with seven home runs, eight doubles, and 33 RBIs, while posting an OPS above 1.000 in limited at-bats. His late-season breakout included a six-game hitting streak and several key performances during ECU’s postseason run, where he provided consistent production in the lineup.

Despite his offensive improvement, Kalinich’s role behind the plate remained part-time due to ECU’s rotation at catcher. With incumbent starter Walker Barron handling the majority of catching duties, Kalinich split time between catcher and designated hitter. Reports indicate that his decision to enter the portal is tied to his desire for a full-time catching opportunity at his next program.
Over his two seasons with the Pirates, Kalinich showed steady offensive development. As a freshman in 2025, he appeared in 35 games and recorded 10 hits with two home runs. His progression in 2026 marked a clear step forward, as he emerged as a dangerous left-handed bat in ECU’s lineup when given regular at-bats.

Kalinich now becomes an experienced power-hitting catcher available in the transfer portal, a profile that could attract interest from programs looking to add offensive production behind the plate. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at his next destination.
His departure adds to a growing list of ECU players entering the portal as college baseball continues to see roster turnover during the transfer window.
