The Atlanta Braves can ill afford another setback in their starting rotation, but that is exactly what unfolded after veteran left-hander Martin Perez suffered an injury. Although Perez has struggled for much of the season—including a difficult outing against the New York Mets—losing him to the injured list after taking a line drive off his pitching arm is another challenge for an already stretched pitching staff. The silver lining, however, may be the long-awaited opportunity for one of the organization’s brightest young arms, Owen Murphy.
With J.R. Ritchie already becoming a familiar name in Atlanta’s revolving rotation plans, Murphy had long been viewed as the next top prospect capable of making the jump to the major leagues. The Braves selected the right-hander in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft, and after recovering from Tommy John surgery, he has steadily worked his way back into top form. While his 2026 campaign at Triple-A began with some inconsistency, Murphy has caught fire in recent weeks, turning in several impressive performances that strengthened his case for a promotion.
As Perez’s injury created another opening in the rotation, reports quickly surfaced that Atlanta was preparing to bring Murphy to the big leagues for the first time. Braves minor league insider Gaurav Vedak reported that the organization intended to promote the highly regarded pitching prospect, signaling that Murphy’s long-awaited debut could finally be at hand.
The Braves have since confirmed the move. Perez was officially placed on the injured list, while Atlanta designated veteran Carlos Carrasco for assignment once again. The club also recalled J.R. Ritchie to the major league roster, completing a series of roster moves aimed at stabilizing the pitching staff.
Although the Braves were initially quiet about Murphy’s promotion, Vedak’s report carried significant weight given his strong reputation for covering Atlanta’s farm system. His track record has made him one of the organization’s most trusted prospect insiders, making the reported call-up far from surprising.

Murphy may not possess overpowering velocity, but his arsenal has proven highly effective. His fastball plays above its radar-gun readings thanks to exceptional induced vertical break, allowing it to generate plenty of awkward swings and missed barrels. He complements that pitch with a pair of quality breaking balls, featuring both a sharp slider and a solid curveball, with the slider standing out as his best secondary weapon. While his changeup remains a work in progress and can occasionally come in too firm, his four-seam fastball has consistently allowed him to neutralize left-handed hitters.
One question that remains is exactly how Atlanta plans to deploy Murphy. Perez’s trip to the injured list makes room on the roster, but Murphy has not appeared in a game since July 1. The Braves could choose to wait a few days before activating him in order to keep him on his normal pitching schedule, or they could accelerate his timeline if they intend to adjust the rotation, particularly with Bryce Elder’s next scheduled start already under consideration.
Regardless of the exact timing, all signs point toward Atlanta entrusting one of the organization’s premier pitching prospects with an opportunity at the highest level. For a Braves club searching for answers amid mounting rotation concerns, Murphy’s arrival could represent both an exciting debut and a potentially significant boost during a critical stretch of the season.
