Newcastle United have officially confirmed the signing of 18-year-old Guinea international, bringing an end to the uncertainty surrounding his move to St James’ Park.
Diabaté, who operates as a defensive midfielder, has already established himself as a regular starter for Gençlerbirliği despite his young age. He has started all three of the club’s Super Lig games this season, helping them collect seven points and sit level at the top of the Turkish league alongside Galatasaray.
Reports about Diabaté’s proposed move to Newcastle were widely covered by the Turkish media last month. By late August, it was reported that the two clubs had reached an agreement worth £3 million, consisting of a guaranteed £2.7 million fee with a further £300,000 available through add-ons.
The reports also indicated that Newcastle would allow Diabaté to remain with Gençlerbirliği on loan, although the Premier League club could reportedly recall him in January if they chose to do so.
There had been no official confirmation from Newcastle until Thursday. The club have now confirmed that Diabaté has joined Newcastle and immediately returned to Gençlerbirliği on loan.
The confirmation came through the Premier League after Newcastle submitted their squad lists for the 2026/27 campaign, including both their senior squad and players classified as Under-21s.
Diabaté will celebrate his 19th birthday on September 24, 2026.
Gençlerbirliği manager Metin Diyadin recently praised the teenager and explained how quickly he had progressed from the club’s youth setup into the first team.
Diyadin revealed that Diabaté initially played for the youth side before being promoted and eventually completing his transfer to Newcastle. He highlighted the midfielder’s maturity, technical quality and ability to read the game, while expressing surprise that other Turkish clubs had not identified his potential sooner.
With Diabaté now officially a Newcastle player, the teenager will continue his development in Turkey on loan before potentially making the step to English football in the future.
