Newcastle’s owners sent contradictory signals about the atmosphere versus Chelsea on social media this weekend, prompting heated disagreement among fans.
Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Jamie Reuben were both impressed with the players’ performance on the field, but they also asked that spectators show’more support in the stadium’ and’match the energy of the players.’
Amanda Staveley, on the other hand, was quite thrilled with the ‘wonderful’ atmosphere on Saturday, noting that supporters are always the ’12th man’.
Here’s what both had to say after the game, with Ghodoussi posting on Twitter and Staveley on Instagram:
@ghodoussi what a team and yes we need to match the intensity of the players with our support 💪

This has spawned numerous discussions on why the atmosphere isn’t as good as it could be – despite the fact that there have been far worse atmospheres this season alone, so it seems a strange game to pick faults on, especially since it was the owners who changed the ticketing system.
Of course, it can always be better, but no fanbase in the country sings for 90 minutes straight, and it would be ludicrous to expect Newcastle fans to do so overnight.
