‘It’s done’: AC Milan have now decided to sack Stefano Pioli

Milan are expected to fire manager Stefano Pioli at the end of the season, with the Italian’s time at the club coming to an end in a matter of weeks.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via TMW), Pioli’s future at the club appears to be more guaranteed than ever. After experiencing difficulties earlier in the season, the loss to Inter has only confirmed the club’s belief that Pioli can no longer lead Milan ahead. Major concerns arose with the Europa League elimination, but it now appears that Pioli will leave at the conclusion of the season.

Names of potential replacements are already being bandied around. Paulo Fonseca and Julen Lopetegui are two likely candidates. Former Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier and former River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo are options, but both have lucrative contracts with Middle Eastern clubs, complicating matters.

PM: AC Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani's plan to reinforce the team

AC Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani attempted to deliver a measured response following the derby defeat to Inter, which resulted in their 20th league triumph.

Milan headed into the game against their city rivals knowing that they only needed to avoid defeat to postpone the title celebrations until the next game, but they failed to do so.

Inter led 2-0 in the first half, with goals from Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram. Fikayo Tomori’s late strike was merely a consolation, as the Nerazzurri mathematically sealed the Scudetto.

Furlani spoke to DAZN after the game and reassured Milan fans about the club’s progress, as reported by MilanNews.

It’s a complicated evening for AC Milan. What are the first thoughts?

“First and foremost, we congratulate Inter; we wish it had been us. We are working hard to make next season a success. I wouldn’t talk about emotions right now; we still have five games left in the season. We are still second, and we hope to maintain that position; we are still focused on the upcoming matches.”

At the beginning of the season were you convinced that you had a team worthy of rivalling Inter?

“We built the team to win; that was the goal last summer, and it is again this summer. You cannot always win. We experienced a significant change in the team last summer; this year will be a reduced workload. “The goal is always that.”

What improvements should AC Milan fans expect?

“Are you saying we just invest in young people? I usually feel that a player’s ability is more important than his age. We’ll aim to build a more competitive team.

And Pioli’s future?

“I can affirm that Stefano Pioli is Milan’s coach. We are focused on completing the season successfully. Moncada, Ibrahimovic, and I are the three guys who report to Gerry Cardinale in terms of sports. These are the folks who report to Gerry, and he makes the final choice.”
