The St. Louis Cardinals head into an off day after taking a series from the New York Yankees and now shift their attention to an upcoming home matchup against the Colorado Rockies.
While the MLB trade deadline is in the rearview mirror, teams can still strengthen their rosters through the waiver wire. Players designated for assignment and released by their clubs remain available to be claimed, giving teams another opportunity to add depth for the stretch run.
That is exactly what St. Louis did on Thursday, claiming outfielder Everson Pereira off waivers from the Chicago White Sox. Pereira had been designated for assignment earlier in the week after Chicago acquired catcher Joey Bart.
Cardinals Add Everson Pereira Through Waiver Claim
MLB Trade Rumors’ Darragh McDonald reported the move after it was officially announced by the Cardinals.
“The Cardinals announced that they have claimed outfielder Everson Pereira off waivers from the White Sox.”
McDonald also noted that the transaction does not immediately require a 40-man roster move.
“The Cards had a couple of 40-man vacancies and don’t need to make a corresponding move in that regard. Pereira is out of options and will need a spot on the active roster when he reports to the team.”
Because Pereira has no minor league options remaining, St. Louis will eventually need to clear room on its active roster once he joins the club, making a corresponding move such as a DFA or release a possibility.
The 25-year-old appeared in his first season with the White Sox in 2026, batting .225 in 80 at-bats while collecting four home runs, five doubles, 11 RBIs, and a league-average 100 OPS+.
Pereira Looking for Fresh Start in St. Louis
Pereira originally reached the major leagues with the New York Yankees in 2023, but struggled offensively during his debut season, hitting .151 across 93 at-bats before moving on from the organization.
He did not appear in the majors during the 2024 season before resurfacing with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2025. His stint in Tampa was also a difficult one, as he hit .138 in just over 60 at-bats, making his 2026 campaign with the White Sox the most productive stretch of his big league career.
Over 238 career major league at-bats, Pereira owns a .172 batting average with six home runs, 29 RBIs, a -0.9 bWAR, and a 49 OPS+.
With his inability to be optioned to the minors, Pereira is expected to fill a reserve role for the Cardinals, likely contributing as a late-game defensive replacement, pinch-runner, or depth outfielder while the club evaluates whether he can carve out a larger role.
